As vaccines roll out and popular destinations reopen, everyone is hitting the road and tarmacs again (including Hollywood). Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos recently vacationed in Italy, Ariana Grande and new husband Dalton Gomez honeymooned in the Netherlands, and Justin and Hailey Bieber had dinner with French president Emmanuel Macron in Paris, to name just a few starry holidays.
“While many of our members were still traveling (although cautiously, and mostly via road trips) in 2020, we’ve seen a drastic increase in both the number of booking requests and confirmed reservations as more and more members are getting vaccinated and are starting to feel more comfortable traveling,” explains Samantha Patil, co-founder and CEO of online membership-based concierge platform Well Traveled.
She adds: “We’ve heard from many members who felt like ‘they missed their chance’ to travel pre-pandemic and aren’t going to let that opportunity pass them by or take their ability to travel for granted moving forward. What’s been really interesting is seeing how quickly members come back to book a second, third, fourth trip after their first ‘post-pandemic’ trip. I think everyone feels some sense of anxiety traveling again after everything that’s happened this past year, but then you arrive somewhere new, you remember there’s more to life than sitting at your computer inside your home, and you kind of exhale.”
Well Traveled’s members have booked twice as many trips in the first five months of 2021 than in all of 2020 combined, and reservations have increased 62 percent month over month, says Patil.
As for where style-minded members are headed, Patil says that Mexico has been one of the most popular destinations, with Angelenos favoring Cabo (Nobu is a top hotel), New Yorkers heading to Tulum and Playa del Carmen (Rosewood Mayakoba continues to be a favorite). “In recent weeks, we’re seeing U.S. travelers start to plan ahead for fall Europe trips, with Greece and Italy being the most popular by far,” notes Patil.
Whether you’re booking low-key staycations or extravagant getaways, now is also a great time to upgrade your luggage, as many retailers are hosting end-of-summer sales on stylish travel accessories.
