We’re now in 2022, and somehow the PlayStation 5 (PS5), which launched over a year ago in November 2020, is still difficult to buy in the UK, both online and in-store. Supply problems and a worldwide chip shortage sparked by the coronavirus pandemic have caused the production of Sony’s games console to slow to a crawl.
But if it’s your New Year’s resolution to finally get your hands on one, fear not, because the IndyBest team is here to help. December was the best month for restocks on record, with a whopping 53 drops taking place at Currys, PlayStation Direct, Game, BT and AO. While it’s been a slow start to January, with us only seeing drops at AO and EE, as well as small independent retailers like Ebuyer and The Game Collection, most retailers are likely still recovering and recuperating their stock levels, so we’re hoping for bigger and better things as January progresses.
Our liveblog is on hand to give you the latest insight on restocks from all major UK retailers, both online and in-store, as well as providing details on rumoured releases, plus the latest PS5 games and accessories to snap up. Keep scrolling for the latest intel.

Can you buy the PS5 anywhere right now?
Yes! But only if you live in a handful of lucky locations and have the time to get to your local branch of Game. We recommend keeping an eye on this Twitter list, which shows tweets from all of Game’s UK stores.
When consoles arrive, store staff announce availability on Twitter, but it’s usually a case of first-come, first-served so you’ll need to be quick.

Best PS5 games
The PS5 has amassed a healthy collection of must-play exclusives over its year-long lifespan. If you managed to bag a PS5 at one of the drops yesterday, you’ll want to pick some of the best PS5 games below up.
In the bestselling Spider-Man: Miles Morales (£44.99, Currys.co.uk), Peter Parker is replaced with his awkward teenage protégé, Miles Morales. A next-generation spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales refines the original’s formula,” our reviewer said. “This is a streamlined adventure with a more focused story, far less busy work and an endearingly clumsy protagonist still getting to grips with his powers.”
Meanwhile, Demon’s Souls (£59.99, Currys.co.uk) on PS5 is a showcase of what the new console is capable of. “The oppressive gothic architecture, yawning arches and festering dungeons of this cult classic look spectacular on the new hardware, while remaining faultlessly faithful to the aesthetic and vibe of the original game,” our tester said.

How do you get a PlayStation Direct PS5 invitation?
PlayStation Direct uses an invitation system to dish out the PS5 (similar to BT), inviting some lucky PSN users to buy the console before the rest of the public. Stock usually goes live from around 8am, and then the retailer opens orders up for everyone else at around 10am. But how do you get an invitation?
It’s an extremely vague process, and we don’t quite know the mechanics of how the PlayStation Direct invitation system works. As far as we know, the main requirement is that you need a PSN account. You probably have to be somewhat active on the network i.e. playing games on your PS4 to get an invitation as well.
Other than that, it seems to be completely random. We’ve seen people who already have a PS5 receive an invitation to buy the console, despite clearly not needing one. We expect another PlayStation Direct restock to take place next week.

Need an Xbox series X?
Struggling to find a PS5? It’s a tough old life this stock hunting business, we know. But if you’re after Microsoft’s next-gen console, you’re in luck! It’s never been easier to bag the Xbox series X than it is now.
The Xbox series X is currently in stock at Asda, Smyths Toys and EE. If you’re searching for the next best thing, your hunt is over. Head on over to our Xbox series X restock liveblog to find out how you can get it.

When was the last Currys PS5 restock?
Currys had a monster month of restocks in December, after it finally ditched its PS5 VIP pass draw system and began selling the consoles to everyone. There were eight in total, and we’re hopeful many more will follow in January.
The console isn’t in stock at the retailer right now, but if we use the Xbox series X as an example, we could definitely see more this month. Currys is one of the best places to find an Xbox series X, with it (on average) restocking the console the most times per month. Let’s hope the PS5 will follow suit. Keep your eyes peeled.

Should you buy a PS5 from CeX?
Ah CeX, the butt of playground jokes and childhood second-hand game nostalgia. While we think fondly of CeX, we’d recommend not buying a PS5 from the retailer.
You’ll be paying out the wazoo for a standalone disc edition console, with the retailer currently selling it for £650. The console usually costs around £449, so you’re better off waiting for Amazon or Very to restock the console than buy it for £200 extra.

We expect BT PS5 stock to drop soon
BT customers, get your account details ready, we’re predicting another restock to happen at the retailer sometime soon. Yesterday, EE had a fairly lengthy restock and that usually signifies one thing – a restock at BT. That’s because EE and BT are basically attached at the hip. When one retailer has a restock, the other isn’t usually far behind with one of its own.
BT tends to favour Mondays, so don’t be surprised to see a restock take place on Monday morning. Obviously, with the post-Christmas muddle, some restock patterns are a little off, so pinches of salt are recommended.

Could Game PS5 consoles come back in stock this month?
If you were with us over the Christmas break, you would’ve seen how long the PS5 stayed in stock for. at Game. The retailer set it live on 23 December, but it didn’t sell out until 31 December – a whole nine days later, so if you’re looking for another drop at Game, you might be waiting a while.
Priority insured orders of the PS5 are only landing on the doorsteps of customers today or next week, with all other orders expected to be dispatched on 21 January. We might see a restock on the week commencing 17 January, but we think it’s more likely that Game will have a drop on the final week of January instead. It’s never easy being Nostradamus.
Game has an huge number of bundles, which can all be viewed on its PS5 bundles page.

Could Smyths Toys PS5 stock drop soon?
Aside from one online drop on 2 December, Smyths Toys has been having exclusively in-store only drops, which we assume are successful enough, or it would have gone back to its old model of dropping consoles online and in-store at the same time.
The retailer last had an in-store restock on 16 December, with consoles reportedly making it into customers arms just days before Christmas. Frustratingly, the retailer no longer updates its website when it has an in-store drop, so we’re mainly relying on leaks from Twitter stock trackers to know when an in-store drop is going to take place.
Smyths likes to restock in-store towards the start of the month, with customers having to pay a small deposit when they initially go in to reserve a console. It could restock any day of the week next week, but we should get more concrete information soon.
