HYANNIS — Figawi returns to Hyannis Yacht Club to race Nantucket Sound over Memorial Day weekend, and while sailors are always welcome spend time on Nantucket, the party remains anchored in Hyannis.
More than 50 boats have already registered, and Figawi Chairman Chris Standish said he has reached out to high school sailing coaches throughout New England to increase student participation.
“The weather last year and COVID were big setbacks,” Standish said by phone Thursday. “According to the Farmer’s Almanac, we should be OK.”
In past years, participants raced from Hyannis to Nantucket, and the post-race tent parties were on the island.
“The boat basin over there is open; the struggle is that we need to make a commitment really early,” Standish said.
Again this year, the Hyannis Yacht Club on Lewis Bay will serve as race headquarters.
What this year has in store
The format remains the same: two days of buoy racing on set courses with the finish back at Hyannis. The long-distance pursuit races begin at 10 a.m. off the Hyannisport jetty on Saturday and Sunday. The boats will make their way out to the start line between 8 and 10 a.m., and spectators are invited to watch from Kalmus Beach.
“The youth race has been ramped up,” Standish said. “We’re bringing in the entire sailing teams from this area. They get a tent during the day. There will be activities for them. They’ll get a chance to talk to all the coaches.”
Standish said organizers look forward to growing the high school races for the Crawford Cup, named for the charity’s longtime chairman, into a premier regional event.
“Next year, we plan to open registration to a much broader group of schools and get athletic departments involved,” he said.
One thing that hasn’t changed: Sailing World Magazine still ranks Nantucket Sound as one of the top U.S. places to sail.
It all goes down at 490 Ocean St. Onsite registration begins at 3 p.m. Friday, May 27, and there will be live entertainment from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday night’s tent party is organized as a thank you to race participants.
